Researchers are practicing to perform gene transfer using bacteria in order to create geraniums without pollen, suitable for allergy sufferers.
Thanks to these investigations allergic people will have the possibility to enjoy beautiful geraniums. The work is carried out by the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Platas, an institution formed by the Higher Council for Scientific Research and the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
The geraniums obtained are characterized by being longer and not producing pollen. The geranium has more than 200 species, it is one of the most popular plants in the world, as well as being very recognized within the ornamental plants market. Within the market of perfumes are widely used.
So far, several species crosses were made, having been able to obtain plants with excellent characteristics. But the technique of transferring genera by a bacterium called Agrobacterium tumefaciens could allow new traits or genes to be introduced.
The CSIC researcher, Luis Antonio Cañas said: “we have used the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens as a means to insert two foreign genes into the DNA of the geranium plant, pSAG12 :: ipt and PsEND1: barnasse. The plants inoculated with pSAG12 :: ipt showed a delay in the aging process of the leaves and an increase in branching with less space between the nodes. The leaves and flowers reduced their size and showed a more intense color. On the other hand, the plants with PsEND1: barnasse lost the anthers, which is the terminal part of the stamen where pollen is produced"
There are many ornamental plants that cause allergic reactions in the general population, Male sterility in ornamental plants could generate different applications in addition to the elimination of pollen allergens.
On the other hand, it should be noted that by using this type of technology, environmentally friendly ornamental plants could be produced.
